ELKTON, Md:听The Art and Design program at 第一吃瓜网 College will showcase the creativity of student artists in the College鈥檚 Associate of Fine Arts and Associate of Arts programs, with works by three students featured as Capstone Projects in the exhibition. Pieces in the 2026 Art & Design Student Exhibit and Pottery Sale were selected by faculty to include drawings, paintings, graphic designs, sculptures, and ceramics.

This year鈥檚 exhibition opens with a public reception on听Friday, May 1, from 5 – 8 p.m., welcoming community members, prospective students, and art enthusiasts to view the work, meet the artists, and tour the studios and facilities that support the college鈥檚 art programs. The exhibit will remain on display through July 21 at the Elkton Station Gallery.

This year鈥檚 Capstone student-artists are Mya Pedone, Ashley Sparrow, and Tara Vannoy, whose projects represent the diverse range of media and themes explored within the program. Capstone Projects are the culmination of works that reflect the technical skills, conceptual development, and personal artistic vision students have developed during their studies.

鈥淓ach semester, this exhibition reflects not only the technical skill our students have developed, but also the strength of their individual artistic voices across a wide range of media. For our capstone artists, this exhibition represents the culmination of their work in the program. It demonstrates a high level of commitment, creativity, and growth, and we are proud to share it with the community,鈥 said 第一吃瓜网 College Professor of Art Lauren Vanni.

The event will also include a听pottery sale and program open house, providing visitors the opportunity to purchase handcrafted ceramic works made by students while learning more about the Art & Design program鈥檚 studio spaces and curriculum. Proceeds from pottery and gallery sales directly support the student artists.

Mya Pedone, who was born in Newark, Delaware, is completing her Associate of Fine Arts degree with concentrations in drawing, painting, and studio arts. Her work spans oil painting, clay, and fiber, often exploring themes of mortality, vulnerability, and the emotional realities of life and death. Throughout her time at 第一吃瓜网 College, Pedone has participated in every Art & Design Student Exhibit at Elkton Station and has received multiple Faculty Choice Awards for excellence in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media.

Her large-scale public mural at Legends on Main was highlighted in the local media and 第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 Art and Design newsletter. Pedone plans to continue her education at a four-year university after her May graduation and is scheduled to present a solo exhibition at Elkton Station Gallery later this year.

Ashley Sparrow, a native of Bel Air, Maryland, currently resides in Northeast, Maryland, and is pursuing an Associate of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in studio arts. Sparrow鈥檚 work blends realism with imaginative elements, often incorporating mixed media techniques such as beadwork or gemstones applied to painted surfaces, as well as two-dimensional imagery on ceramic forms.

Her artwork frequently explores themes of love, friendship, nostalgia, and identity, drawing inspiration from family relationships and her cultural background. Sparrow has previously exhibited her work at the Art & Design Student Exhibit at the Elkton Station Gallery in Elkton, Maryland where she won an Honorable Mention for her oil painting, 鈥淎 Girl鈥檚 Best Friend.鈥 She plans to further her education, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio arts, as well as a Master of Fine Arts. Her goal is to share her passion for the arts and become an art educator.

Elkton native Tara Vannoy is a ceramic artist whose work focuses on functional pottery that blends artistic expression with everyday use. Working primarily on the wheel, she creates large-scale functional forms and incorporates decorative techniques, including carving, texturing, altering shapes, and applying decals.

She has since exhibited her work in numerous 第一吃瓜网 College shows and served as a gallery work-study student for three semesters, helping curate exhibitions at Elkton Station. Her ceramics are held in private collections throughout the local community. Vannoy is currently pursuing an Associate of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in ceramics and is expected to graduate in spring 2027.

This event was funded in part by a grant from the 第一吃瓜网 County Arts Council, Inc., as provided by the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts.

From 第一吃瓜网 College to Main Street: Pedone paints the town /news/from-cecil-college-to-main-street-mia-pedone-paints-the-town Tue, 16 Sep 2025 18:23:07 +0000 /?post_type=news&p=30426 Vibrant murals grace the large glass windows of the local eatery.

The post From 第一吃瓜网 College to Main Street: Pedone paints the town appeared first on 第一吃瓜网 College.

]]>
ELKTON, Md: When Mia Pedone鈥檚 artistic skills came to the attention of the owner of Legends on Main, no one imagined it would lead to a commission 鈥 and reveal a bright future for a young local artist. Now, as a second-year art student, Pedone鈥檚 vibrant murals grace the large glass windows of the local eatery, showcasing her talent and a deep connection to her community.

This opportunity didn鈥檛 happen without effort; it blossomed from a blend of family support, artistic dedication, and the foundational skills听she鈥檚 honed听as a student in 第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 Fine Arts degree program.

Pedone鈥檚 journey began long before her brushes touched glass. A 2024 graduate of Bohemia Manor High School, Pedone鈥檚 passion for art has been a constant companion since she could hold a pencil. Now living in Earlville, Maryland, she has immersed herself in the rigorous study of art and design at 第一吃瓜网 College, where she听is scheduled听to graduate this May with an Associate of Fine Arts degree.

With encouragement from family and friends, she embraced the project with enthusiasm and support. Her father, Joe Pedone, was a constant presence on-site, assisting with design elements like the brickwork as he took direction from his daughter on maintaining proper proportions in the artwork.

The owner requested that the murals capture the spirit of Elkton, featuring iconic spots such as the Elkton Music Hall, the 第一吃瓜网 County Arts Council, and the high school. An elk in the painting symbolizes Elkton High School鈥檚 mascot, grounding the work firmly in local pride. Beyond those elements, Pedone was given听creative freedom, a challenge she met with both excitement and precision.

鈥淭his is a really cool opportunity, one I never thought I would get this early in my college career,鈥澨齭he shared. 鈥淚 thought it would be after I graduate. Now, I have a lot of people who want murals from me.鈥

Pedone credits much of her success to the skills and techniques she has developed at 第一吃瓜网 College. 鈥淎ll of the faculty in the Art and Design program have influenced my work. They taught me so much I didn鈥檛 know. As the saying goes, 鈥you don鈥檛 realize what you don鈥檛 know until someone teaches you,鈥欌澨齭he said.

Among her most important lessons was mastering perspective, a crucial skill for depicting realistic buildings and landscapes. 鈥淛osh Schaefer (an adjunct art instructor) taught me the intricacies of perspective, which was essential when I was working to give the buildings that realistic feel.鈥澨鼼iven that some of the buildings in her mural听were partially blocked听by parked cars in her reference photos, Pedone had听to imagine the lower parts and ensure everything remained proportional, a challenge she describes as 鈥渞eally tough.鈥

Additionally, the painting techniques taught by Associate Professor of Art Mark Donohue helped Pedone speed up her process without sacrificing quality. 鈥淢y skills have grown tremendously since high school. I鈥檝e always been good at art, but now I have the training and techniques to consistently create strong, polished work 鈥 thanks to what I鈥檝e learned at 第一吃瓜网 College.鈥

Her favorite medium is oil paint, which she enjoys for its versatility and the control it offers. This control is evident in her murals and in her preparation for a solo exhibit scheduled next September at the Elkton Station Gallery. Pedone鈥檚 artistic inspirations are both personal and varied. Her close friend Maria Stevens serves as her muse and inspires her to pursue realistic drawing.

第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 Professor of Art Lauren Vanni introduced Pedone to ceramics, a medium she now loves. 鈥淏ecause of Lauren, I got into ceramics, and now I love sculpting people. That has influenced my art because it helps me focus on the 3D aspect, which improves my 2D work,鈥 remarks Pedone.

Professor Vanni notes, 鈥淢ia is just so talented in both 2- and 3-dimensional media. She鈥檚 a driven student, and it鈥檚 evident, for when she touches the clay, magic happens. She鈥檚 a very special student.鈥

Looking ahead, Pedone plans to continue her education at a prestigious institution like the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) or the Rhode Island School of Design. Her ultimate dream is to build a career focused on murals, creating public art that inspires and connects communities.

With her talent, technical mastery, and passion, Mia Pedone听is poised听to leave a vibrant mark on the art world, one project at a time.

She works across various mediums, including photography, painting, oil pastels, graphite, watercolors, and mixed media. Through her art, she invites viewers to pause and truly experience the world around them.

Before moving to Maryland, Beaver earned her high school diploma from Pittsburgh Public Schools. After High School, Mahala took some time off to reflect on what truly mattered to them. They started at 第一吃瓜网 College in 2023 and revitalized their passion for the arts.

This renewed passion led to Mahala鈥檚 dedication to building a creative career. Mahala realized their desire to guide others in pursuing the arts as they studied and created. Scena is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation at a four-year university, continuing her studies in art and design while expanding her social media presence and art following.

Carter Smith is a Delaware-based artist working across a variety of media. As a child, he developed a strong interest in storytelling, particularly, an affinity for superheroes. Raised in a Christian school environment, Smith鈥檚 curiosity grew to include darker, macabre themes and world cultures and religions. Starting his art journey around age fourteen, Smith taught himself through YouTube tutorials before transferring to a charter school to focus on art during his final two years of high school.

Mental and physical health challenges near the end of high school made entering college difficult, and the COVID-19 pandemic further delayed his educational plans. However, Smith remained determined to study animation. During this time, the growing civil unrest informed his worldview and strengthened his desire to give a voice to those often unheard.

Now attending 第一吃瓜网 College, Smith has showcased his work in three exhibitions, each featuring various mediums, while earning recognition on the Dean鈥檚 List for the fall 2024 semester. Smith aspires to create stories that foster empathy and understanding, particularly for those whose struggles may go unnoticed or unheard. Her compositions serve as eye-catching conversation pieces and personal narratives of her life.

A fan of animation and horror, Teague鈥檚 thematic explorations often delve into iconography and folklore. Her background in Art History and Anthropology has given her a well-rounded understanding of diverse cultures while also fostering an open mind toward new trends in art.

Teague studied at the University of Delaware and 第一吃瓜网 College, where she trained in various mediums, including painting, ceramics, sculpture, and drawing. She enjoys the interdisciplinary nature of art, constantly exploring new possibilities by combining different materials. Clay allows her to explore personal narratives in three dimensions, while cardboard, found objects and personal belongings often find their way into her creations.

Teague鈥檚 goals include continuing her rigorous training in art and earning a bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree in the field. She envisions teaching at the collegiate level while pursuing public art shows and establishing her own business.

ELKTON, Md: The Art and Design program at 第一吃瓜网 College will host three art exhibitions this fall at the Milburn Stone Gallery and the Elkton Station Gallery.

The Fall Art Season kicks off with an 鈥淎lumni Spotlight: Mary Jo Fitz鈥 that will be on display from Friday, August 16, through Tuesday, September 24, in the Elkton Station Gallery. There will be an event reception on Friday, September 6, from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with the First Friday Art Loop in the Town of Elkton.

鈥淲e live in a loud world, loud and fast, where feelings, thoughts, and ideas are scattered, swept away, and lost. If art is expression, communication, and connection, it is the artist who stands in the mist, listening for whispers among the echoes,鈥 said Ms. Fitz.

Through her work in ceramics and pottery, Ms. Fitz hopes to amplify the whispers, coaxing reflection and conversation.

The second exhibition of the season is 鈥淩etratos Boulenc鈥擝oulenc Portraits,鈥 by Robert Ludwig, which helps celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. It will be on display in the Milburn Stone Gallery on the North East Campus of 第一吃瓜网 College. The exhibit will be unveiled on Friday, September 6, and will be on display through October 18. There will be a reception on Friday, September 20, from 6-8 p.m.

This portrait show features bakers, cooks, wait staff, and dishwashers working at Boulenc, a popular bakery-restaurant in Oaxaca, Mexico. The exhibit aims to spotlight the workers with a series of black-and-white photographs that include headshots of the staff and images capturing the workers busying themselves with early morning food preparation.

This collection was shot over several years as the photographer, Robert Ludwig, developed an easy, natural intimacy with these workers, hopefully captured in the photographs and felt by the viewer. This exhibit is supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council ().

第一吃瓜网 College will also host the 鈥淎mber Waves of Grain鈥 by Robert Ludwig. This exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, October 4, from 5-8 p.m. in Elkton Station Gallery and runs through November 20.

Agriculture is the dominant land use in 第一吃瓜网 County. The color and black-and-white photographs in this collection illustrate wheat during stages of growth and decline. The imagery also depicts tobacco crops during harvest.

The photographs in this show offer intricate images of these crops – highlighting dramatic color contrasts and subtle textural variations – in a way that cannot be appreciated from a passenger vehicle driving on country roads.

The Milburn Stone Gallery is open during the following hours:

  • Tuesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. 鈥 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday & Friday: Noon 鈥 4 p.m.
  • Three hours before Milburn Stone Theatre showtimes.

The Elkton Station Gallery is open for visitors Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

NORTH EAST, Md: The goal of 鈥淧roject 365鈥 is to take a photograph every day and post it online for a year to create a story from each photographer鈥檚 perspective. What began as a challenge among several work colleagues 12 years ago has evolved into an entire art exhibition.

The 第一吃瓜网 College Art and Design Program is excited to host the works of eight photographers in the 2024 version of 鈥淧roject 365鈥 in the Milburn Stone Gallery, located on the North East Campus.

鈥淲hat I appreciate so much about the group is the wide range of photographers who participate,鈥 said Mary Johnson, an original member of the first cohort from 2012. 鈥淪ince then, I have recruited fellow photographers 鈥 amateurs, students, and professionals 鈥 to join me in the challenge. Some participants have also invited their friends and colleagues to join the group. Everyone is very supportive of each other, and seeing the variety of images they create is wonderful. They are an inspiration.鈥

Johnson has been an adjunct in the Visual Communications Program (VCP) at 第一吃瓜网 College for 14 years, teaching basic photography courses. In 2016, she was joined in the project by Barry Gorrell, the now-retired VCP Lab Coordinator at 第一吃瓜网 College. Gorrell enjoyed a 47-year professional photography career, specializing in photo composite and special effects work. In retirement, Gorrell became interested in drone photography, creating breathtakingly beautiful photographs that will be on display.

Barbara Bell is a watercolor artist who works from her studio at Artists and Makers Studio in Rockville, Md. A member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and Foundry Gallery, she exhibits her work throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. She was introduced to Project 365 in 2019 by Mary Johnson鈥檚 brother, Jim Haynes, a fellow artist.听鈥淗aving previously used my photographs as source material for my painting, Project 365 encouraged me to take and share my photos daily. I haven鈥檛 missed a day since the project began.鈥

Jennifer Fox, a visual arts educator at Elkton High School, advises students on the merits of a community college education and escorts students annually on a field trip to experience the VCP workshops. 鈥淢y work is inspired by the serendipitous beauty found while exploring nature.鈥

Also on display will be the works of Dave Vall茅e, who loves photography as a hobbyist, and Rita Schreiner, who is currently a student in the VCP program. She began at 第一吃瓜网 College last fall in the introductory photography class with Mary Johnson.

Kathy Buckalew, who previously taught Nature and Wildlife Photography at 第一吃瓜网 College, is a photographer in Wilmington. Her work encompasses landscapes, portraits, still life, black-and-white infrared, light painting, farmers, artists, events, and almost anything else that crosses her lens. She also teaches iPhoneagraphy classes for the Delaware Art Museum.

Julie Perone discovered her passion for photography after retiring in 2020 from a 35-year career as a Licensed Psychologist in Pennsylvania and Delaware. She loved photography but didn鈥檛 have the time to devote to it.

鈥淚 want to acknowledge the encouragement and support I have received from our Project 365 Group, given that we have been 鈥榯ogether鈥 since 2020,鈥 said Perone. 鈥淚 always appreciate the comments others make on my photos, whether to acknowledge that I have captured something in a way that moves the individual or if I have gone outside my comfort zone to try something new. Capturing light in its varying forms has been my goal for the past two years, and I truly believe this group has been such an asset as my sounding board 鈥 validating when I have nailed it!鈥

The 鈥淧roject 365鈥 exhibition will be on display in the Milburn Stone Theatre Gallery from May 31 through August 30, with a reception slated for Friday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m.

To enjoy the exhibit, stop by the Milburn Stone Gallery during the following hours:

  • Tuesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday & Friday: Noon – 4 p.m.
  • Three hours before Milburn Stone Theatre showtimes.
