ELKTON, Md.: The 第一吃瓜网 College Art and Design Program will feature a solo exhibition by Craig McDowall entitled 鈥淓lemental Forces鈥 at the Elkton Station Gallery, located at 107 Railroad Avenue, Elkton, Md. The 鈥淓lemental Forces鈥 exhibit opens in conjunction with the Elkton Art Loop First Friday event on October 6. There will be an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 6, from 5 鈥 8 p.m.

鈥淚 am concerned about climate change and its effect on everything globally. The topic encompasses all aspects of life, and I would have to dig deep to find something that ties it all together artistically. I explored the idea of climate models for a long time, but it didn鈥檛 quite click,鈥 said McDowall. Then, while listening to a radio program suggesting various aspects of climate change are reaching 鈥渢ipping points,鈥 or the point of no return, McDowall knew immediately what his theme would be. He quickly scribbled the phrase on a sticky note.

Through drawings and large sculpture, McDowall explores his view that nature strives for balance while humanity constantly pushes in destructive directions. He visually explores a tipping point being reached, and nature drastically adjusting to maintain the balance. His art conveys tension; a moment when things might tumble out of control.

The artworks include the classical Greek elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. McDowell鈥檚 work suggests that those are the elements that appear to be attacking humanity at every turn as the climate changes. McDowall contends that humanity is a fifth element in a new Anthropocene epoch and that there is constant tension between the Greek elements, technology, and humanity.

鈥淢y work represents my view that humanity has pushed the other elements to their tipping point, and nature will try to restore the balance of the Elemental Forces,鈥 said McDowell. 鈥淲hich may cause tumult.鈥

A native of Colorado who now lives in Maryland, McDowall earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree with concentrations in sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. After graduation, he exhibited his work widely in Colorado at juried and invitational exhibits.

McDowell and his wife Cathy lived for a time in Texas, where he attended the San Antonio Art Institute as an artist-in-residence. While living in the Pacific Northwest, he was the finalist for a large outdoor sculpture commission in Olympia, Washington.

In 2012, the couple moved to Perryville, Md., where he enjoys sketching and continuing the聽. His work can be viewed at聽

第一吃瓜网 College was a perfect fit for First-Generation Alumna Jessica Cooke /news/cecil-college-was-a-perfect-fit-for-first-generation-alumna-jessica-cooke Thu, 08 Jun 2023 15:33:11 +0000 /?post_type=news&p=18820 Her dream is to establish an art studio where community members can come to make art and learn more about ceramics and painting.

The post 第一吃瓜网 College was a perfect fit for First-Generation Alumna Jessica Cooke appeared first on 第一吃瓜网 College.

ELKTON, Md. 鈥 Discovering one鈥檚 passion sometimes takes a lifetime. For others, it comes in an inspirational moment. That was the situation for Jessica Cooke when she first placed her hands in wet clay in the ceramic studio at 第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 Elkton Station.

鈥淧ainting has been a passion my whole life. But if I hadn鈥檛 decided to attend 第一吃瓜网 College, I would never have discovered my love for working with clay and the empowerment it instills,鈥 said Cooke, a 2018 North East High School graduate. 鈥淚 now know the direction I wish for my life.鈥

Cooke planned to attend 第一吃瓜网 College for two years as it enabled her to keep her job and save money while working toward an associate degree. Fortune was in her favor as Elkton Station was closer to her home than 第一吃瓜网鈥檚 main campus, which put the possibility of taking a ceramic course on her pathway to success.

鈥淚 tried out a class thinking it was something different in art, and that class was my introduction to ceramics. I loved it so much that I changed my major to fine arts,鈥 said Cooke.

Upon graduating from 第一吃瓜网 College with an Associate of Fine Arts, she transferred to Salisbury University, where she carried over her passion for ceramics. Being in a university setting assisted in growing self-confidence on the potter鈥檚 wheel along with sculpting. Cooke found confidence through the ability to help classmates with challenging tasks in addition to her skill loading kilns, which is a very meticulous chore. In May of 2022, Cooke completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

鈥淛essi鈥檚聽creativity, enthusiasm, and academic success made her a standout student in the Art and Design Program,鈥 said 第一吃瓜网 College Art Professor Lauren Vanni, who runs the ceramic鈥檚 lab. 鈥淪he was continuously recognized for her outstanding work, and she earned the departmental award in Art & Design in the spring of 2020. This award goes to an outstanding student selected by the art faculty. Her achievements continued as she pursued her bachelor鈥檚 degree at Salisbury University.鈥

All of Jessi鈥檚 wonderful qualities that made her a standout student then,聽make her an integral part of our team in the ceramics studio at 第一吃瓜网 College today.聽We are happy to have her back in the studio helping students as the Ceramics Studio Assistant. She is an inspiration to students.

Cooke has now returned to her first alma mater to perfect her skills as a studio assistant at 第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 ceramics lab. This offers the opportunity to enhance her knowledge of pottery and ceramics. The continual challenge remains making glazes that produce the outcome she seeks for each pottery piece.

鈥淟earning about glazes was challenging when I first entered the studio, which differs greatly from painting. A glaze may be brown in liquid form, but it comes out bright blue when you fire it in the kiln. Visually, it is different from what you expect it to be. I worked on a couple of pieces for hours, and I was very proud of them. Then, when they came out of the kiln, it was not what I expected,鈥 said Cooke.

Realizing pottery and ceramics entail lifelong learning, Cooke follows several social media pages that provide various tips and tricks as well as subscribing to numerous YouTube channels which provided inspiration and knowledge. She is seeking everything she can learn and maintains a notebook to record the effect of each glaze. She says potters must remain open-minded about the outcome of each piece and how it will appear.

Working in the Elkton Station studio also allows Cooke to experiment with the different clay forms, as each has its unique quality. Porcelain, which comes from a refined clay fired at very high temperatures of approximately 1,200鈥1,450 degrees Celsius, is the most challenging material due to its lack of grog. Grog is a raw material usually made from crushed and ground potsherds, reintroduced back into crude clay to temper it before making ceramic ware.

Cooke, who is in the process of mastering working with strong and durable stoneware, enjoys applying the Raku technique. Raku is a Japanese style of pottery where the clay object is removed from the kiln at the height of the firing, causing it to cool very rapidly.

鈥淭here are Raku glazes that are not food safe because of the heavy metals in them, but you get a fantastic result after the firing,鈥 said Cooke. She added that Raku ware is commonly found in tea bowls. 鈥淲orking in the ceramic studio, I am doing what I love. I am helping other students, and I am learning new skills. It is an extensive learning process because I want my own studio someday. I cannot wait to get into the studio to work on my projects.鈥

Her dream is to establish an art studio where community members can come to make art and learn more about ceramics and painting, and she has begun to gather equipment, including a kiln given to her by a family member.

鈥淚 plan to save money in the next few years and determine the next step. In the meantime, I am trying to learn as much as possible,鈥 said Cooke. 鈥淚 want a pleasant, inviting environment. I would love to have a place where people want to come to create their art, discuss their work, and help one another.鈥

While pottery and ceramics are her primary focus, she hasn鈥檛 forgotten about her first love of painting, looking for a way to integrate both mediums. She states the most significant difference between her painting and clay is the ceramic piece is done when it comes out of the kiln, whereas her paintings are continually worked on by applying different layers.

鈥淚 use many painting techniques with clay, such as using a lot of underglazes and masking off where the clay will show through. I start with my sketchbook for the basic design. It helps to determine where to mask off a portion of the clay with wax and when to use a lot of layers. This is time-consuming, but I enjoy the outcome,鈥 said Cooke. 鈥淚 want my paintings and ceramic pieces to seem like they are talking to one another. I want them to feel connected to someone even though one is two-dimensional and the other is three-dimensional. I work on pieces simultaneously.鈥

Cooke plans to continue her education soon as the University of Delaware offers an MFA degree. Her current work will be part of the portfolio she will present as part of the admissions process, which is on display this summer at the Milburn Stone Theatre Gallery 鈥 鈥淢emory Garden.鈥 This exhibit runs through August 25. Through detailed paintings and playful ceramics, Cooke explores nostalgia, grief, forgiveness, and layered identity. Memory Garden uses sentimentality as a love letter for old childhood memories and to seek closure from inevitable realities.

ELKTON, MD. 鈥 第一吃瓜网 College will reveal its spring 2022 Art & Design Student Exhibit with a reception and pottery sale on Friday, May 6, at 5 p.m. in the Elkton Station Gallery, located at 107 Railroad Ave. This year鈥檚 exhibit will feature Capstone Projects from Grace Harreld, Ryan Magargee, and Holly Wynn. Capstone Projects are long-term investigative projects culminating in a final product or presentation.

This exhibit will feature drawings, paintings, designs, sculptures, and ceramics selected by the art faculty, representing the range of work created in the program. Some of the artwork is available for sale with proceeds benefiting art students. Visitors can purchase pieces during the opening reception and throughout the exhibit. This exhibit runs through July 25 and is part of Elkton鈥檚 First Friday Art Loop.

Grace Harreld is a Maryland artist working in a variety of media including oil paint, charcoal, pastel, and digital art. Her work focuses on climate change, the relationship between the natural world and humankind, socialization between humans, and urban development. Inspired by Futurism, Expressionism, and Fauvism, she creates exaggerated versions of what the world looks like. Examples include littered beaches, forests reduced to barren land, melting glaciers, and starving animals.

鈥淢y work reflects the negative aspects of the world and how they can be changed through community and sacrifice. I investigate the corruption, exploitation, and degeneration plaguing the environment and humankind. It is a call for societal change; an attempt to spark discussion and reconstruct how people think about the world,鈥 said Harreld.

Harreld graduates in May with an Associate of Art and Design with a concentration in Drawing and Painting from 第一吃瓜网 College. She plans to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Design Communications.

A native of New London, PA, Ryan Magargee began drawing from a young age and studied art seriously in high school. Inspired by anime and manga, he draws characters and landscapes, creating visual narratives for the viewer. He uses various media, including pencil, pen, charcoal, watercolor, oil paint, and gouache.

鈥淚 love to create characters. Characters from TV shows, movies, video games, and comics are important to me as an artist. I enjoy sketching and the gestural feeling of a pose or expression,鈥 said Magargee. Magargee is pursuing his Associate of Art and Design with a concentration in Drawing and Painting from 第一吃瓜网 College.

Born on Long Island, N.Y., and raised in Wilmington, Del., Holly Wynn works in various mediums, particularly oil and acrylic paints. She explores a variety of subjects such as portraits, colorful landscapes, and themes that are inspired by her feelings and experiences. In 2020, Wynn decided to study art at 第一吃瓜网 College with a concentration in Graphic Design. Since continuing her education, her work has been shown in several of the College鈥檚 exhibitions, including Art Responds, an exhibit of art containing social commentary, and several end-of-semester student shows.

聽鈥淚 became interested in art at a young age, and it quickly became ingrained into who I was. 聽Art is a very human thing that anyone can participate in or merely appreciate regardless of skill level or life experience,鈥 said Wynn.

There are two ways to enjoy the Art & Design Student Exhibit this year. The Elkton Station Gallery is open for visitors Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The second option is to view the artwork online at .

NORTH EAST, Md. 鈥 第一吃瓜网 College Professor Andrew Dickenson and Brandon Gorin, Assistant Technical Director at Milburn Stone Theatre, have created an awe-inspiring video that blends mystical music scores with digital artistic vision to carry the viewing audience down a path of enlightenment. This project, entitled Yonko LLC, features 30 exceptional scores written and performed by Dickenson that set the mood for viewing Gorin鈥檚 digital artwork.

The idea for Yonko LLC came about when Dickenson was working on another project based on Gorin鈥檚 poetry. During this time, Gorin completed his goal of posting 10,000 images on Instagram, planting the seed for Dickenson鈥檚 inspiration.

鈥淭hat inspired me, and I approached him with an idea involving those 10,000 images. What came out of that conversation was a vague idea to pass pieces back and forth and create something based on what we sent each other. We weren鈥檛 exactly sure what the end product would look like or how long we would keep it going, but we were both excited to start something like this,鈥 said Dickenson.

The process started with Gorin providing artwork to Dickenson, which is the first image in the video. He then wrote some music based on that first image and sent it back to Gorin, who then created a new piece based on what he heard. This process repeated until they came up with the final product.

Beginning on September 3, 2021, Dickenson and Gorin exchanged two to three 鈥淢ovements鈥 a week until the Yonko LLC was completed just before Thanksgiving.

鈥淲hen Brandon sent me the artwork, I would usually spend some time just looking at it and letting my mind wander. I tried not to force ideas for music and let sounds just come to my mind naturally as I responded to the emotion of the art. As a result, I ended up using a lot of effects and processing and a lot of experimental ideas,鈥 said Dickenson.

They decided to limit this first video to 30 Movements and are currently working on the next video. They plan to have the second video completed within the next few weeks with the assistance of recording engineer Eric Bostic, who teaches at 第一吃瓜网 College.

Dickenson and Gorin have taken an organic approach to promoting Yonko LLC. They have been handing out stickers that feature a QR code, which takes the viewer to the video on YouTube. They have also created a website to document their projects () and are in the process of featuring the music on digital platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. There are plans for a digital booklet to go along with the album. Lisa Lutwyche, who also teaches at 第一吃瓜网, wrote a beautiful poem from her reaction to watching the video and included it with the liner notes of the digital booklet.

ELKTON, Md. 鈥聽The 第一吃瓜网 College Art and Design Program is excited to announce the Fall 2021 Art and Design Student Exhibition on display in the Elkton Station Gallery that highlights works by Port Deposit native Kellie Huller.

Huller created two- and three-dimensional pieces throughout the pandemic and into the fall semester in preparation for her Capstone Project. These projects are long-term investigative ventures that culminate in a final portfolio.

鈥淕rowing up in rural 第一吃瓜网 County has been a genuine inspiration to me as an artist with all of its great sources of varied landscapes,鈥 said Huller, who will be completing her associate degree in May. 鈥淥ne of the significant influences in my development has been the natural world, from fields and forests to pebbles and bones.鈥

Port Deposit is a small, charming town seated on the banks of the Susquehanna River comprised of rolling hills, farmland, and residential homes. As a homeschooled student, Huller鈥檚 exposure to Mother Nature鈥檚 beauty was extensive due to Port Deposit鈥檚 magnificent scenery.

鈥淪ince I was a small child, I have been enamored with nature. From the minute details of how a snail shell curves into itself, to the majesty of the Grand Canyon, to mysterious ocean-dwelling creatures, there are endless phenomena to fascinate the mind. From this, my portfolio is largely made up of nature, wild and domestic animals, and landscapes,鈥 said Huller.

There are several artists from whom Huller draws inspiration. The late television personality and artist Bob Ross鈥 ability to create picturesque landscapes of towering mountains over calm lakes and forests with just the flick of the brush heightened Huller鈥檚 imagination, as did the psychedelic illustrations of Ikegami Yoriyuki. His mesmerizing paintings capture a carefully balanced mixture of delight and mystery through color usage.

Huller鈥檚 portfolio displays a range of polychromatic color schemes in which contrasting colors are layered, usually involving bright primary hues.

鈥淢y sculpture and ceramic works are inspired by organic forms found in the natural world. I greatly appreciate how the English sculptor Henry Moore kept natural items such as pebbles, bones, and driftwood in his studio for inspiration. I have my small collection of found items and natural objects that inspire me,鈥 said Huller, who sees her work as an ever-growing collection of tributes to the natural world.

Huller鈥檚 work projects a diverseness seldom seen among exhibitions. Along with landscapes, she is drawn to the imagery of food themes鈥攕pecifically the celebration of food in all its dimensions. She has always been drawn to illustrations of food, specifically ones that exaggerate its aesthetically pleasing qualities to make the viewer hungry. Huller gains inspiration for these works from contemporary American painter Wayne Thiebaud who is known for his delightful oil paintings of pastries and desserts which also utilize a range of bright contrasting colors.

The Fall 2021 Art and Design Student Exhibition is now open for public viewing in the Elkton Station Gallery. The gallery hours are Monday 鈥 Thursday, 8 a.m. 鈥 8 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. 鈥 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. 鈥 5 p.m. Due to the pandemic, there was no opening reception for this exhibition. The exhibit can also be viewed virtually by visiting the 第一吃瓜网 College Art Galleries on Flickr.

NORTH EAST, Md. 鈥 On the heels of record sales for digital artwork by Christie鈥檚 auction house earlier this year, 鈥渘on-fungible tokens鈥 or NFT鈥檚 as they are known in the art world, have become the talk of the town. While this art medium is currently trending, the idea of using digital technology to create artwork is an old concept for 第一吃瓜网 County鈥檚 Brandon Gorin.

Gorin, who has worked in traditional art mediums his entire life, began utilizing digital tools more than ten years ago. This work has culminated into his most recent exhibition, the Four Letter Word Series, that is now on display at the Milburn Stone Theatre Gallery on the North East Campus of 第一吃瓜网 College.

鈥淲hen I started the digital stuff, I decided to make 10,000 images, and I made a rule for myself that there would be a two-hour span between the creation of each image. Different ideas and projects came from that concept as I slowly worked towards 10,000 images,鈥 said Gorin, who is currently at more than 12,400 images.

Gorin鈥檚 electronic tool of choice is an iPhone, which he uses to take photographs, manipulate the images, color and draw each piece of his artwork, and design the final project. While he has used traditional computers to create some of his works, Gorin enjoys the convenience of having his phone handy at all times so he can create while riding the bus or sitting in a caf茅.

鈥淎 lot of people care about the phone part of my digital art, and for me, it is just the tool in my pocket that I can reach. I am not unlazy. If you are going to give me the easiest tool, I am going to use the easiest tool in any situation,鈥 said Gorin.

To create the elements for his work, Gorin primarily uses three apps. The first is Glitche, which turns images into pixelated, glitched-out works of art that can be saved as GIF files. The second is Photo Leap that can recreate every subtle aspect of actual film, with great attention to general accuracy, color separation, skin tones, and grain texture. The third is Layout by Instagram. This tool is ideal for making collages and allows for creating a one-of-a-kind layout by remixing photos. Layout鈥檚 smooth, intuitive process gives users complete creative control.

But using a cellphone presented Gorin with many challenges, such as storage space for high-resolution pieces. He developed several workarounds with the aid of the Cloud, where he fills up the phone鈥檚 memory and then uploads the files. Another pitfall is Glitche does not allow for the export of high-resolution images, so Gorin places the piece in Photo Leap to digitize the image.

From his thousands of images, Gorin began creating collages through layers. Because the iPhone is backlit by nature, Gorin was able to include vibrant bright colors. During this phase of his artistic development, the iPhone presented another challenge as it would only allow for five layers at a time. That number has increased to 12 layers for the newer generations of iPhones, but Gorin worked around this problem by saving each group as a new layer, permitting more layers to be added.

鈥淭hese creations became good enough that I said, 鈥業 can print these out and display in different exhibits,鈥欌 said Gorin, who takes more than three months between creating the piece and having it printed. His Four Letter Word Series is of older work as he is currently working on landscapes.

Gorin, the Assistant Technical Director for the Milburn Stone Theatre in North East, Md., has included a sticker machine in his current exhibit where visitors can insert 50 cents and take home a tiny version of the show. While this exhibition is non-virtual, Gorin鈥檚 art is ordained for the virtual world where he posts all his creations on Instagram under his name. ELKTON, Md. 鈥 Dominic 鈥淣ic鈥 Galloro has always been fascinated by how shapes and objects organically appear in nature and intertwine inherently to form entities of beauty, whether it be an animal, a leaf, or a babbling brook. This connection to nature helped him develop a powerful bond with the environment, which is reflected in his artwork.

Galloro鈥檚 latest exhibition, 鈥惭颈肠谤辞辫濒补蝉迟颈肠蝉,鈥聽highlights the impact humans have on the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay by revealing the effect plastics are having on the environment. Galloro has skillfully crafted his artwork from the plastic materials he found along the shorelines of the bodies of water to expose the extent of environmental impact.

I have always used recycled natural materials to create my artwork. This is just an extension of that concept. At first, I didn鈥檛 have a concept in mind, but I looked at those pieces as design elements to see if they could somehow work together to make a unified composition,鈥 said the Havre de Grace resident.

Galloro鈥檚 鈥惭颈肠谤辞辫濒补蝉迟颈肠蝉鈥聽exhibition is slated to open at the Elkton Station Art Gallery on Saturday, Sept. 18, with an opening reception slated for Friday, Oct. 1. This exhibition will be on display through Nov. 18, with gallery hours of Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. 鈥 8 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. 鈥 4:30 p.m.

鈥淥nly recently have I begun to use art as a way to make a statement, and this is an easy statement for those viewing it to understand. I thought, 鈥榣et鈥檚 use art as a visual language to make a statement about the impact of plastics on the environment.鈥 I have been an environmentalist since I was a kid when you could collect soda bottles for a nickel,鈥 said Galloro.

Galloro is not alone in his quest to help the Chesapeake Bay. He is a member of Citizens Against Trash, also known as the CAT Club, who have met every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Concord Point Coffee House in Havre de Grace for the past seven years. From there, the group heads out to pick up trash that has washed up along the shoreline as well as litter throughout the town.

鈥淚 know things can be washed down the drain or go down the street to the water. To me, that was very concerning. As I picked up things, I kept the plastics and put them together as sculptures to make a statement about it all,鈥 reflected Galloro, who has been an artist his entire life.

Before retiring to Havre de Grace several years ago, Galloro was an art teacher for more than 20 years in Montgomery County and volunteered to be the school鈥檚 sustainability 鈥渃zar鈥 responsible for educating the students on the benefits of recycling. As an art teacher, he worked to introduce students to the tools and聽methods in order to refine their vision.

The exhibit鈥檚 centerpiece is a wall of floating plastic items, pulled from the Susquehanna and Chesapeake Bay, attached to boards representing water. Jumping out of the water are fish composed of small plastic bits held together by Venetian blind scales and pieces of vegetable net bags.

鈥淎 lot of artists visualize in their minds and work things around. As an art teacher, you try to get students to conceptualize what they are trying to say, to articulate a statement. To give them the tools they can work with,鈥 said Galloro.

Another impactful piece is his聽鈥淪argasso Sea鈥澛sculpture, a globe cradled in a bed of bottle caps, pull tops, and other small plastic containers. The inspiration for this piece came from his time in the Navy as a sonar operator when his ship traveled through the Sargasso Sea, a region of the Atlantic Ocean bounded by four currents forming an ocean gyre. An immense island of trash swirling within the Sargasso Sea pulls in the trash dumped in the ocean.

鈥淚 have seen film of it since where there is more trash than ever, and it circulates in a giant eddy. So, I wanted to make the comparison that the whole earth is the Sargasso Sea. Surrounded by plastic trash,鈥 said Galloro, whose exhibit began its road tour at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum earlier this year. 鈥淚 sometimes feel like I am an urban archeologist.鈥

A placard containing two articles about pollution in the Chesapeake Bay ushers visitors into the exhibit.

The meaning behind Galloro鈥檚 artwork is meant to be disturbing in the viewer鈥檚 minds, so current generations are uncomfortably aware this is happening in the environment. A corollary hope is to make the next generation aware of what plastics and trash do to the environment.

鈥淚t comes full circle when I hear someone say, 鈥榦h my gosh. Look at that. Look at that. This is what鈥檚 happening to the earth?鈥 I want that reaction,鈥 said Galloro. 鈥淚 think we have made the kids realize that waste needs to go into one place and recyclables need to go into another place. I want young people who come to see this exhibit to pick up that habit and understanding.鈥
