NORTH EAST, Md.听鈥 The 第一吃瓜网 College Foundation has announced the establishment of the听第一吃瓜网 Soil Conservation District Edgar 鈥淒uty鈥 Hevelow Memorial Scholarship, created to support students pursuing careers in natural resources and conservation.

The $3,500 scholarship honors the legacy of Edgar 鈥淒uty鈥 Hevelow, a longtime advocate for agriculture and conservation in 第一吃瓜网 County. The scholarship will provide ongoing support to local students pursuing studies in environmental and agricultural fields at 第一吃瓜网 College.

鈥淭his scholarship was established in part to spark greater interest in agricultural studies and expand opportunities for students pursuing careers in conservation and environmental stewardship,鈥 said 第一吃瓜网 Soil Conservation District Coordinator Tracey L. Rach.

Hevelow served on the 第一吃瓜网 Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors from 1972 to 2013, dedicating more than four decades to advancing conservation practices and supporting the agricultural community. His work with the district spanned nearly his entire 60-year farming career.

Among his many contributions, Hevelow encouraged landowners to collaborate on a drainage relief project that helped address severe flooding concerns in the Warwick-第一吃瓜网ton community. He also played a key role in educational outreach and in construction activities for conservation. In the early 1990s, Hevelow became the first farmer in the Delmarva region to install a series of water and sediment control basin structures that continue to function today.

Throughout his career, Hevelow implemented numerous best management practices on his farm, including grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures, sediment control ponds, and stream crossings. These efforts helped demonstrate the value of conservation-focused farming practices and left a lasting impact on the region.

The new scholarship will support 第一吃瓜网 County residents pursuing programs related to natural resources and conservation, including agricultural and environmental studies. Eligible students must be residents of 第一吃瓜网 County and pursue coursework in a conservation-related field such as Agricultural Sciences, Horticultural Science, or Ecology.

第一吃瓜网 College offers several programs aligned with these fields. The Agricultural Sciences Associate of Applied Science degree includes concentrations in Agriculture and Agribusiness and prepares students for careers in farming, agricultural business, and environmental management or transfer to a four-year institution. The Associate of Science Biological Sciences provides students with concentrations in Biology or Environmental Science.

The College also offers two certificate programs related to the agricultural and natural resources industries. The Horticultural Science Certificate prepares graduates for careers in landscaping, nurseries, garden centers, and grounds maintenance. The Equine Studies Certificate focuses on horse care and management.

The 第一吃瓜网 Soil Conservation District works closely with educators as a resource for agricultural classes and community initiatives such as Ag Day in 第一吃瓜网 County. The district sponsors three scholarships supporting local students through partnerships with 第一吃瓜网 County Public Schools, the 第一吃瓜网 County School of Technology, and 第一吃瓜网 College, and works with organizations such as the Upper Bay Ruritan Club to support agricultural education.

NORTH EAST, Md: The鈥谝怀怨贤疌ollege鈥疐oundation is pleased to announce the creation of the Professor John鈥疜elleher Memorial Scholarship, a new financial assistance initiative established by the faculty of 第一吃瓜网 College to honor the legacy of Associate Professor of History John鈥疨aul鈥疜elleher and to bolster the next generation of history-minded scholars in 第一吃瓜网 County.

Professor鈥疜elleher served at 第一吃瓜网 College from 2017 until 2025. He was deeply committed to learning, meaningful conversation, and service to others.

鈥淧rofessor John Paul Kelleher’s kindness towards his students and passion for history not only rebuilt my self-confidence as a returning adult student, but it also showed me how to be a truly great teacher. I have become a more forgiving and understanding person who hopes to inspire people as a history teacher, just like Professor Kelleher inspired me,鈥 said Scott Simpson, a recent 第一吃瓜网 College graduate.

Professor鈥疜elleher鈥檚 wealth of knowledge and compassion inspired both students and colleagues. Professor Kelleher understood that for human beings to thrive in the present, we must understand our shared past. Professor Kelleher鈥檚 dedication to education began when he earned a B.A. in History from Drew University with a minor in Russian. He went on to complete an M.A. in Soviet and Russian History from Indiana University and to achieve ABD status in American Urban History at Loyola University Chicago.

His education laid the foundation for what became both his profession and his calling. He brought a global perspective and rich experience to his teaching: from working at the Moscow Energy Institute in the former Soviet Union, to teaching English as a Second Language in the Czech Republic, to teaching high school social studies in New鈥痀ork, Madrid, and Berlin, and finally to higher education instruction beginning in 2009 and culminating in his eight鈥憏ear tenure at 第一吃瓜网 College.

This scholarship supports students with an expressed enthusiasm for the study of history, giving preference to those with an intention to teach history or pursue related fields. They must have taken at least one history class at 第一吃瓜网 College and earned a GPA of鈥3.0 or higher in that course. Recipients will be selected based not only on academic performance, but also on their expressed commitment to history, service, and education.

RISING SUN, Md: The 第一吃瓜网 College Foundation hosted its annual Scholarship Breakfast earlier this month at the Rising Sun Banquet Hall, an event that introduces generous contributors to the students benefiting from the scholarships they support.

More than 250 donors, scholarship recipients, 第一吃瓜网 County officials, and representatives from the College and Foundation attended the event. This event provides an opportunity for scholarship donors to meet the students they have supported through their generosity.

鈥淲e are gathered here today not only to recognize the academic achievements of these exceptional students, but also to celebrate the deep impact scholarships have on our broader communities. None of this is possible without the support of our local government, business leaders, and community members who recognize the importance of education and the impact it has on the prosperity of 第一吃瓜网 County and the surrounding region,鈥 said Dr. Jonathan Seidenberg, Chairman of the 第一吃瓜网 College Foundation. 鈥淭hese students are committed to their education and to improving their futures, which in turn helps improve our future as a community. I commend these students for their dedication and thank you for being here with us today.鈥

The 第一吃瓜网 College Foundation Board of Directors comprises 25 community leaders who work to develop financial and other resources to support 第一吃瓜网 College students. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the Foundation awarded scholarships to a total of 338 students, amounting to $520,633.

One of those 338 students benefiting was Avery Brown, a North East High School graduate who entered this fall鈥檚 semester as a freshman having already accumulated 30 credits with a 3.75 GPA.

鈥淭he opportunities 第一吃瓜网 College provided have already made a huge positive impact on my life,鈥 said Avery, recipient of the 第一吃瓜网 County Council Scholarship. 鈥淒uring my senior year, I was able to take classes and earn credits that applied to both high school and college. This experience opened my eyes to the realm of possibilities a college education could offer, and it made the transition from high school feel exciting rather than intimidating.鈥

While maintaining a part-time job during his senior year, Avery鈥檚 dedication to his education earned him honor roll recognition. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders Club, where he attended the Maryland Future Business Leaders Conference this past spring.

鈥淥riginally, I planned to earn an associate degree in business administration, but thanks to the incredible generosity of the 第一吃瓜网 County government and its donors, I鈥檝e been able to expand that vision as I鈥檓 now pursuing associate degrees in both management and accounting. This two-year scholarship not only lifted a financial burden but it also revealed opportunities that I didn鈥檛 know were possible,鈥 said Avery. 鈥淎fter I graduate with my associate degrees and transfer to a four-year university, I don鈥檛 know where my path will lead, but whichever path I choose, I know I鈥檒l be well prepared thanks to the foundation that has been and will continue tobe builtat 第一吃瓜网 College.鈥

Keynote speaker D.J. Wootson, a proud alumnus of 第一吃瓜网 College, delivered an inspiring story centered on the power of recognizing and seizing opportunities. Coming from Wilmington, Delaware, Mr. Wootson reflected on how significant this moment was for the students in the audience who now sit in the same seat of opportunity he once did. He emphasized that being at 第一吃瓜网 College, especially with the support of scholarships, is a unique and powerful chance to pursue success.

Mr. Wootson shared his personal journey of adversity and transformation, offering a raw account of his struggles growing up. At 15, he had failed multiple grades and was already facing fatherhood. With his father absent and his mother doing her best to raise him, he found himself headed down a difficult path. But basketball opened a new door when 第一吃瓜网 College鈥檚 Coach Bill Lewett recruited him. Mr. Wootson took the chance, though unfamiliar with 第一吃瓜网 County at the time, and made the most of it – becoming an All-American athlete and the College鈥檚 all-time leading scorer. This step was the beginning of a trajectory that would take him to Georgia State University, graduate school at Vanderbilt, and beyond.

His time in higher education opened doors in the business world, where he gained knowledge of finance, investments, and entrepreneurship. Mr. Wootson used those lessons to build a successful real estate and construction business. Now a business owner, pilot, and self-made success, Mr. Wootson credited it all to taking that first opportunity at 第一吃瓜网 College. He encouraged the students to recognize the value of their current situation, to work hard, and to remain resilient in the face of challenges.

鈥淥pportunities don鈥檛 always present themselves twice. They are fleeting, and what you do with them now can shape your future,鈥 said Mr. Wootson. 鈥淥ne day, all of you could be the ones giving back, transitioning from scholarship recipients to donors. So, take full advantage of the opportunities in front of you today.鈥

During the breakfast, the Mary A. Maloney Distinguished Service Awardwas presentedto Sarah W. Colenda in recognition of her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to community service. In accepting the award, Colenda honored the legacy of her mentor, Mary Maloney, pledging to continue fostering opportunity, empowering students, and advancing the mission of 第一吃瓜网 College.

The breakfast concluded with the presentation of the Health Education Lift Program (HELP) Fund Awards to incoming nursing students. These awards included the students鈥 stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and other instruments for their program. The 第一吃瓜网 College Foundation is seeking additional donors to enhance the HELP Fund and expand the support it provides.
